Good plan

So yesterday was declared an official day of prayer to plug BP’s leaking well by state governors along the Gulf Coast ( plus Alaskan half-termer Sarah Palin). Meanwhile, also yesterday: Oil spill makes first landfall on Mississippi mainland, hits Alabama beaches Countless patches of light oil sheen moved into waters north of the barrier islands of Alabama and Mississippi on Sunday, as brown and orange blobs washed ashore from Orange Beach to as far west as Ocean Springs. Boats worked to corral iridescent sheen just north of Dauphin Island’s Katrina cut Sunday morning.
Sarah Bell: ‘We Beat the Oil on Race Day’: Resilience in Mobile, Alabama

Hurricane Katrina created a sense of both self-sufficiency and skepticism in Mobile, Alabama that still exists today. Down on this coast, locals hesitate to believe that any support from either the government or BP is on its way. Tammy Herrington of Mobile Baykeeper cherishes the waterways along this coast. We met her in the Gulf, where she expressed her fear of the unknown chemical make-up of the dispersants and looming reality that hurricane season was approaching.
Joseph B. Margolick: Needed: Another Cooper Union Speech
Posted February 27th, 2010 by impalin
Today, Feb. 27, is the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s speech at Cooper Union in New York City, which the eminent Lincoln historian Harold Holzer has called the speech that made him president. Why was his address that night so successful, and what does it mean for us today, including for President Obama? The answer is, a lot. On Feb. 27, 1860, the nation was in mortal crisis. A crucial issue of the day was whether the Federal government could forbid the extension of slavery into U.S. territories.

Recent straw polls show Sarah Palin with a slight edge over Mike Huckabee for the 2012 GOP nomination. If that doesn’t frighten you enough, there is a plausible scenario where she becomes the default candidate of the Republican Party. So when both leading candidates showed up at Books-A-Million in Birmingham, Alabama last week , I took my camera to get a look at their operations. Neither candidate has declared, but what I saw may be a preview of what’s to come in 2012. I want to stress that I had no intentions of “punking” anyone.
Taylor Marsh: Disgruntled Democrats

Be careful what you wish for goes the old saying. The compliment in politics that applies today is: Be careful what you promise. A Democratic congressional majority, plus the presidency is a wonderful thing, but only if you use the power to implement policies you pledged to enact. Heard a lot about this during my Washington Journal appearance earlier today. You can watch it here. Suffice it to say that “disgruntled” is being polite. We talked a lot about health care, though I don’t think Harry Reid will appreciate I suggested he should take his cues from Rep.
Sen. Sessions: Original Gangster

Hey, anybody remember that whole thing where the Bush “administration” US Attorneys were illegally politicized by, among others, Karl Rove, who never answered his subpoena from either the House or Senate Judiciary Committees on the subject? Yeah, me too. And I know that everyone’s got their eye on the issue of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) just being a straight-up racist.

Sarah Palin Sent Suspicious Powder
Posted December 9th, 2008 by impalin
JUNEAU, Alaska — An eighth letter containing suspicious powder and addressed to a governor’s office was intercepted in Alaska on Tuesday, and it bore a Texas postmark like suspicious mailings to other governors this week, officials said. A spokeswoman for Gov. Sarah Palin said the letter was received Tuesday in Juneau at a mailroom about a block from the Capitol, and it was addressed to Palin’s predecessor Gov. Frank Murkowski, who left office two years ago. Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said the letter came from Texas, but she didn’t know which city.
