Lee Stranahan: Repo Men vs. Repo! The Genetic Opera: Behind The Controversy

Name the movie with the following plot… In a dystopian future, organ transplants have become a commodity and the giant corporation that sells them sends out repo men to take back hearts, kidneys and other innards from customers who aren’t paying their bills. Actually, that summary describes two completely unrelated film projects with two completely different creative teams from two different movie studios. Striking similarity in both the premise and in aspects of the marketing campaigns for the two films has caused confusion, bad feelings and an uproar on the Internet.

McCain's crazy campaign mouthpiece evokes "Red Scare"

Congratulations to the McCain campaign, it's quite possible they've found a mouthpiece that is even more twisted, vicious and unethical than Sarah Palin. Yesterday on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), a prominent McCain-Palin supporter, launched an unfettered, crazy rant where she said, among other things, that she's "absolutely" concerned that Obama is anti-American.

PolitiFact’s ‘Lie Of The Year’: Death Panels

Of all the falsehoods and distortions in the political discourse this year, one stood out from the rest. “Death panels.” The claim set political debate afire when it was made in August, raising issues from the role of government in health care to the bounds of acceptable political discussion. In a nod to the way technology has transformed politics, the statement wasn’t made in an interview or a television ad. Sarah Palin posted it on her Facebook page. More on Sarah Palin

This is going to be a fairly quick-hitter for a Wednesday, for a variety of reasons (one of which has to do with me not being able to wear shoes for part of the day…don’t ask). The main reason, though, is that new campaign news today has been harder to come by than the exact whereabouts of Governor Sanford. AK-Gov: Alaska Republicans Worry That Palin is Bailin’ Is Alaska Governor Sarah Palin about to go the Tim Pawlenty route? Over the past week, speculation has arisen that Sarah Palin may choose to forgo a second term as governor.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, some recent, highly-publicized non-fiction debuts are sure to get you in the mood for romance: Staying True , by Jenny Sanford, chronicles the very public breakdown of her marriage to South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, who wasn’t hiking on the Appalachian Trail after all. Marry Him by Lori Gottlieb, the subtitle of which, the Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough , says it all, accuses you of being too picky and urges you to snap up that guy who’s an eight rather than waiting for the 10.

The indispensable George Lakoff has been very illuminating on the topic of the political brain this week. He explains how what appears irrational to liberals is experienced without a whiff of irony by the conservatives. One of the glaring inconsistencies I’ve noticed is the Tea Partiers’ insistence that the bank bailout was wrong and evil, coupled in the same breath with a denunciation of higher taxes on the rich.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my outrage at the level to which John McCain and his ill-advised advisers were willing to stoop to get him elected president. The selection of Sarah Palin has only served to distract both presidential candidates from addressing the real issues. I am insulted as a women and as an American at the desperation of John McCain and his use of “Country First” as a campaign slogan. Clearly, this selection of Sarah Palin has everything to do with John McCain and his last possible chance to be elected.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Levi Johnston’s lawyer is bristling at suggestions from Gov. Sarah Palin’s family that the 19-year-old is a deadbeat dad. “I wish that Sarah Palin’s father would get his facts correct, quite frankly,” attorney Rex Butler said Wednesday. Johnston and Palin’s daughter, 18-year-old Bristol, have a nearly 4-month-old son, Tripp. Since the couple broke up, Johnston has claimed in several national television interviews that the Palins were limiting his access to the boy.
